Caravan Checks
The UK has been experiencing some pretty wet, windy and cold weather over the past few months but that all looks ready to take a turn into some warm, sunny conditions perfect for camping. As we start to feel brighter our minds will begin focussing on getting away and enjoying everything that the great outdoors has to offer. As campsites begin to get booked up and journey’s planned it is pretty easy to forget to check the running and working order of our outfits.
An annual caravan service or motorhome habitation service will ensure things are running smoothly on a regular basis but it is also important that things are checked prior to any trip. Time and time again we get calls from customers the night before or even on the day of travel as they find an issue with their caravan or motorhome. Don’t be the one to get caught out and potentially run the risk of cancelling your trip away. Follow our simple checklist to ensure everything is ready for a stress free, enjoyable time away.
Safety First
- Checks tyres – for cuts, nails, bulging and tread. They ideally need changing every 5 years on a caravan. Also ensure that they are at the correct pressure for travelling, especially if your caravan or motorhome has been sat for some time.
- Handbrake – Check handbrake and make sure the tyres are free running (they could have seized after the winter).
- Hitch and tow ball – Clean and re-grease.
- Wheels – Check the nuts are torqued before every journey and recheck 20-30 miles into a journey.
- Lights – Hitch up to your tow vehicle and check that all lights are working.
- Gas – Run gas through and switch gas appliances on. Where there is a visible flame ensure that it is blue in colour.
- Water – Run fresh water though the system and check taps to ensure that everything is working ok with no leakages.
- Electrics – Check all electrical appliances using the 240V system. Then check appliances on 12V system (this will require a good, healthy, well charged battery).
- Locks – Check all locks are working correctly and apply lubricant if necessary.
- Toilet – Check blade valve opens and closes freely and fill the flush. Check that it is flushing ok with no black particles coming through. It will need silicone applying if the blade is stiff and a thorough clean if black particles can be seen.
All that remains is to pack your personal items needed for a great time away. These pre journey checklists may help with those final preparations before departure. Happy Camping!
